Ganpati Parade
Ganpati Parade is our tribute to the extraordinary people and city of Mumbai and one of its most popular deities – the elephant headed lord Ganesh. Each year after the monsoons millions of clay idols of Ganesh are immersed in the sea after an eleven day festival. This music is driven by the funky rhythms and authentic drums from the street processions that wind their way to the beach midst dancing and merry making. As the parade gains momentum, a spirit of abandon and exuberance takes over, ending in a frenzied climax.
Theme for Hawk Hemp
Theme for Hawk Hemp opens with an etherial violin solo in free form Alaap style. A fat funky groove propels the spirit through an undulating soundscape of exotic textures, mystery and mischief.
The Workshop
The Workshop came about as a result of several percussion sessions and master classes that went down in Mumbai when Bob Weiner unexpectedly pulled into town. A large array of drums, shakers and sound makers create layer upon layer of sonority; revealing melodic forms and interlocking rhythmic relationships. A lively conversation between share drum, tabla and Ghatam gives way to a hypnotic trans groove.
The Guide
The Guide is a three movement suite dedicated to all the great folks from South Africa that we love and respect. A lone gospel style guitar sets up the mood and spirit and is followed by a vigorous counterpoint between all the melodic and Indian percussion instruments. The second movement comes to a rollicking conclusion and gives way to an exhilarating percussion improvisation.
Horn Ok Please
Horn Ok Please is the album’s title track and is taken from the slogan printed on the tailgate of practically every truck in India. This exuberant road song is driven by Indian and Latin rhythms and features an extended duet between bass and cuica; a Brazilian friction drum.
Ganpati Parade Reprise
The parade continues ever onward, displaying the power and beauty of Maharashtra state.
